NEMPN Paid Internships Pledge

Calling all paid internship providers!

NEMPN wants to end unpaid internships and the inequity they perpetuate through our Death to Unpaid Internships initiative. We know that internships provide access to networking, on-the-job experiences, and skill-based learning that help prepare emerging museum professionals for the field. However, all internships are not equal.

Unpaid internships perpetuate systemic oppression and bias and create inequitable pipelines into viable careers in the field. Unpaid internships limit opportunities and experiences to only individuals who can afford to go without compensation for their work. This cannot continue. We are asking institutions to take a stand and pledge to end this inequity within their programs.

By submitting your institution sign the pledge, you are agreeing to the following:

  • If your institution funds your internships, all interns a reasonable minimum wage ($15+/hr USD) or whatever is considered fair compensation for your institution’s market and the experience level of the intern.
  • If your institution receives funding through a partnership (with an university, another organization, etc.), that you and your partner are ensuring a reasonable minimum wage or whatever is considered fair compensation for your institution’s market and the experience level of the intern.
  • If your institution has unpaid internships in addition to paid internships, that you are actively working towards developing a funding plan within your own budget or through a partnership.

We encourage all institutions who can agree to the above pledge to submit their info and logo below to be highlighted on this page.
