In the wake of the recent violence in Atlanta, the National EMP Network Board grieves for the loss of life of the eight victims of this hate crime. We are sending love and standing in solidarity with the Atlanta community, as well as the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community at-large.
As many have noted, this is one in a series of escalating incidents of racial discrimination and violence against the AAPI community. We again encourage the necessary actions and transformative changes required to address racism and white supremacy in our museums, histories, and culture. We have seen many museums respond over the past year to the demonstrations against police brutality and systematic injustice. We reiterate that museums are cultural spaces for all and should strive to represent the many diverse cultures and histories that encompass our globe. We encourage institutions to continue to step up, respond, and commit to change.
For Atlanta resources, we want to highlight the Asian American Resource Center and Korean American Coalition Metro Atlanta, both of which empower and strengthen communities by providing culturally competent support services. For those looking for self care and educational resources, we encourage looking into the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center. The Center serves as a dynamic national resource for discovering why the Asian Pacific American experience matters every day, everywhere, and all of the time.
