NEMPN’s Advocacy Committee is committed to making museums more equitable! We are excited to announce that our Salary Transparency Form will relaunch on January 1st, 2022. With the new year, we are recognizing the need for action. There is an abundance of conversations happening within the field regarding diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion. Disclosing salary ranges on a job posting may not solve all of these problems, but it is an important step in the right direction.
We understand the concerns museums often express when sharing salary information; fear that it will scare away candidates, fear that it will cause current employees to become disgruntled if they find a new hire could be making more money, and even the desire to get the “best value for your dollar.” We want to assure you that all of the above are completely unfounded.
Museums would save time and money in the hiring process and attract candidates that are able to work within the salary budget just by listing the salary range up front.
Furthermore, if there is fear that employees will be disgruntled when finding out each others’ salaries, it is important to remember that “Pay Secrecy” policies are illegal under the National Labor Relations Act. Employees talk and eventually any difference in pay will be discussed.
And lastly, just because museums are non-profits does not excuse our trusted organizations from properly compensating skilled workers. The practice of “Salary Commensurate with Experience” is one of the issues contributing to the gender and racial pay gap in the larger workforce. We know budgets are tight, but you know how much you can afford to compensate a candidate before the hiring process even begins. We urge you to do the right thing. Pay everyone the same wages for the same job – and for goodness sake POST THE SALARY!
What can NEMPN do to help? We are excited to announce that our Salary Transparency Form has relaunched on January 1st, 2022. With the new year, we are recognizing the need for action. Starting on January 1st, you can submit job postings that do not include a salary and NEMPN will reach out to the museum to start a conversation. This completely anonymous process will encourage museums to join us in creating a more equitable workforce.
